Various Academic Courses in Physical Education

Physical Education is a fast-growing discipline in India, and a wide range of academic courses is now offered by different educational institutions to prepare people for the field. The courses fall into two groups: the teacher-training courses recognised by the NCTE, and the many diploma, bachelor and master programmes offered by universities and institutions.

NCTE-recognised teacher-training courses

The National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) recognises the courses that prepare teachers of Physical Education for the school system. It recognises only three courses for Physical Education teachers:

  1. Diploma in Physical Education (D.P.Ed.) - prepares Physical Education teachers for the elementary stage, i.e. for Classes I to VIII.

In addition, research-oriented courses - M.Phil., Ph.D. and Post Doctorate Fellowship (P.D.F.) - are offered in Physical Education.
