Composition and Size of the Nucleus
The nucleus of an atom is made up of two kinds of particles, collectively called NUCLEONS: PROTONS, which carry a positive charge of exactly each, and NEUTRONS, which carry no electric charge at all. A given nuclide -- a nucleus of a specific composition -- is written in the standard notation , where is the chemical symbol of the element, is the ATOMIC NUMBER (the number of protons, which also fixes the element and, in a neutral atom, equals the number of orbiting electrons), and is the MASS NUMBER (the total number of nucleons, protons plus neutrons). The number of neutrons, sometimes given its own symbol , then follows simply as
Because almost the entire mass of an atom resides in its nucleons (an electron's mass is only about of a proton's mass), the mass number also gives, to a very good approximation, the mass of the atom measured in atomic mass units (Section 8.3).
Experiments that fire fast alpha particles or high-energy electrons at nuclei -- essentially repeating Rutherford's original scattering idea with far greater precision -- show that a nucleus behaves, to a good approximation, like a small sphere of nearly uniform density, whose radius grows with the number of nucleons it contains according to the simple empirical law

What this figure shows. A schematic close-up of a nucleus drawn as a tightly packed cluster of small spheres arranged in a roughly spherical clump, with no empty space visible between neighbouring spheres. The spheres are of two kinds, distinguished only by shading/labelling since both are drawn the same size: PROTONS, shown filled with a '+' mark on each and labelled 'p' just outside the cluster with a leader line pointing to one representative sphere, and NEUTRONS, shown unfilled/plain with no charge mark and labelled 'n' the same way. The protons and neutrons are mixed together at random throughout the cluster, not sorted into separate regions. A dashed circle is drawn around the whole cluster indicating the nuclear radius , with a short double-headed arrow from the centre to the edge of the dashed circle labelled ''. A caption below states the total number of nucleons visible in the sketch equals (mass number), of which the labelled pro …
