(i) BeCl2_2 in the vapour phase

In the gas phase at high temperature, BeCl2_2 exists as a discrete, linear monomeric molecule:

Cl−Be−ClCl - Be - Cl

Beryllium is sp hybridised here, using two sp hybrid orbitals to form two equivalent, linear Be–Cl σ\sigma bonds with a bond angle of 180∘180^\circ. Be has only 4 electrons around it (electron-deficient), consistent with its small size and the absence of low-lying d orbitals to expand its octet at this stage.

(ii) BeCl2_2 in the solid state

In the solid state, BeCl2_2 is polymeric. Each Be atom is surrounded tetrahedrally by four Cl atoms — two chlorines bonded normally, and two chlorines that bridge to the neighbouring BeCl2_2 unit, each contributing a lone pair to complete the octet around Be. This produces a chain (zig-zag) structure of the form:

⋯−Cl2Be(μ-Cl)2BeCl2(μ-Cl)2Be−⋯\cdots -Cl_2Be(\mu\text{-}Cl)_2BeCl_2(\mu\text{-}Cl)_2Be- \cdots …
