Interhalogens are binary compounds of two different halogens, type XX'n (n = 1,3,5,7), e.g. ClF, ICl, BrF3, IF5, IF7.

Definition: Compounds formed by the union of two different halogen elements are called interhalogen compounds. They have the general formula XX'n, where X is the heavier (larger, less electronegative) halogen and X' is the lighter (smaller, more electronegative) halogen, and n = 1, 3, 5 or 7. As the size difference between X and X' increases, the value of n increases.

Types and examples:

  • XX' (n = 1): ClF, BrF, ICl, IBr
  • XX'3 (n = 3): ClF3, BrF3, ICl3
  • XX'5 (n = 5): BrF5, IF5
  • XX'7 (n = 7): IF7 …
