Volume density of charge = charge per unit volume, ρ=q/V\rho = q/V, unit C/m³.

When charge is distributed continuously throughout a three-dimensional region (a volume), we describe it using volume charge density ρ\rho.

It is defined as the charge per unit volume. If a small volume element ΔV\Delta V carries a charge Δq\Delta q, then

ρ=lim⁡ΔV→0ΔqΔV=dqdV\rho = \lim_{\Delta V \to 0} \frac{\Delta q}{\Delta V} = \frac{dq}{dV}
