IoT (Internet of Things) connects physical devices to the internet for data collection and control, while WoT (Web of Things) uses web standards to make those IoT devices accessible and interoperable through the web.

This is a plain theory question — it asks for a conceptual explanation of the relationship between two closely related technologies. The answer must clarify how they differ and how they connect, not just define each term in isolation.

The Core Idea: Devices vs. Access

Think of IoT as the infrastructure layer — the actual hardware, sensors, actuators, and network protocols that bring a "thing" (a light bulb, a temperature sensor, a smart lock) online. IoT is about connecting the physical world to the digital world.

WoT is the application layer built on top of IoT. It takes those connected devices and makes them discoverable, controllable, and composable using standard web technologies — HTTP, REST APIs, JSON, WebSockets, and URLs. WoT is about interoperating with those devices through the web.

Note

A simple analogy: IoT is like having a telephone line installed in your house (the connection exists). WoT is like having a phone book and a common language so anyone can call you and understand what you say (the access is standardised).

How They Are Related

AspectIoTWoT
FocusConnecting devices to the internetMaking devices accessible via web standards
ProtocolsMQTT, CoAP, Zigbee, Bluetooth, proprietaryHTTP, REST, WebSocket, JSON-LD
AbstractionLow-level (sensor data, network packets)High-level (resources, APIs, mashups)
GoalData collection and device controlInteroperability and integration
ExampleA temperature sensor sending data via MQTTA web API that returns {"temp": 25.3} when you GET /sensor/temp

WoT presupposes IoT. You cannot have a Web of Things without first having an Internet of Things. The WoT standard (W3C Web of Things) defines a Thing Description — a JSON-LD document that describes a device's properties, actions, and events in a machine-readable way. This allows any web client to interact with any IoT device that exposes such a description, regardless of the underlying IoT protocol.

Tip

In practice, many IoT platforms already implement WoT principles. For example, a smart bulb's IoT layer handles the Wi-Fi connection and the LED control; its WoT layer exposes a REST endpoint like PUT /light/state with a JSON body {"on": true}.
