λ1\lambda_1 (satellite communication) is a microwave, λ2\lambda_2 (germicidal water purifier) is ultraviolet, and both λ3\lambda_3 (underground pipeline-leak detection) and λ4\lambda_4 (runway fog visibility) are infrared. Ascending order of wavelength: λ2<λ3=λ4<λ1\lambda_2 < \lambda_3=\lambda_4 < \lambda_1.

Part (a) -- identifying the bands

  1. λ1\lambda_1 -- satellite communication →\to microwaves. Microwaves (roughly 1 mm-30 cm) pass through the ionosphere with little absorption, travel in narrow, focusable line-of-sight beams, and carry high bandwidth -- the standard band for satellite uplink/downlink.

  2. λ2\lambda_2 -- killing germs in a water purifier →\to ultraviolet. UV photons (typically around 254 nm, in the UV-C band) are absorbed by the DNA/RNA of bacteria and viruses, damaging it and preventing them from reproducing -- this is UV germicidal disinfection.

  3. λ3\lambda_3 -- detecting oil leakage in underground pipelines →\to infrared. A leak raises (or otherwise alters) the temperature of the soil directly above and around it very slightly. Infrared thermal imaging/thermography detects this small temperature anomaly from the surface, revealing the leak's location without digging.

  4. λ4\lambda_4 -- improving runway visibility in fog and mist →\to infrared. Fog droplets scatter the shorter wavelengths of visible light strongly, but infrared's longer wavelength is scattered much less and penetrates fog and mist far better -- which is why infrared-based imaging/lighting improves runway visibility.

Watch out

λ3\lambda_3 is infrared, not gamma rays. Gamma-ray radiography is a different real technique (used to check weld/wall-thickness flaws in metal), but detecting a leak from outside a buried pipe by its thermal signature is an infrared/thermal-imaging application, not a gamma-ray one.
