Between sampling and non-sampling error, the non-sampling error is more serious, because it affects even a complete census, cannot be reduced by enlarging the sample, and is difficult to detect and correct.

The two kinds of error

  • Sampling error: the difference between the sample estimate and the true population value that arises simply because only a part of the population is observed. It exists only in sample studies.
  • Non-sampling error: errors in the actual process of collecting and handling data — wrong measurement, faulty questionnaire, respondent giving wrong answers, non-response, mistakes in recording or tabulation. These occur in both census and sample surveys.
