Definition. For two nearby coils, a current I2I_2 in coil 2 produces a flux that partly links coil 1; the mutual inductance M12M_{12} is defined by

N1Φ1=M12I2N_1\Phi_1 = M_{12}I_2

so that M12M_{12} is the flux linkage induced in coil 1 per unit current flowing in coil 2. Symmetrically, a current I1I_1 in coil 1 induces a flux linkage N2Φ2=M21I1N_2\Phi_2=M_{21}I_1 in coil 2.
