σ bond: end-to-end overlap, strong, allows rotation; π bond: sidewise overlap of p-orbitals, weaker, restricts rotation.

Sigma (σ) bond: formed by the head-on (coaxial/end-to-end) overlap of atomic orbitals along the line joining the two nuclei (s–s, s–p, or p–p axial overlap). The overlap is large, so the bond is strong.

Pi (π) bond: formed by the sidewise (lateral/parallel) overlap of two half-filled p-orbitals perpendicular to the internuclear axis. The electron cloud lies above and below the axis; overlap is smaller, so the bond is weaker.

Differences:

  1. Overlap: σ by axial overlap; π by lateral overlap.
  2. Strength: σ is stronger; π is weaker (less effective overlap).
  3. Existence: a σ bond can exist independently; a π bond is always formed in addition to a σ bond (in double/triple bonds). …
