Alkyl halide + sodium in dry ether gives a symmetrical alkane with twice the number of carbon atoms (Wurtz reaction).

The Wurtz reaction is used to prepare higher alkanes containing an even number of carbon atoms. When an alkyl halide is treated with metallic sodium in dry ether, two alkyl groups couple to form a symmetrical alkane, and sodium halide is eliminated.

General reaction:

2 R-X + 2 Na -> R-R + 2 NaX (dry ether)

Example (preparation of ethane from methyl bromide):

2 CH3-Br + 2 Na -> CH3-CH3 + 2 NaBr

Example (preparation of n-butane):

2 CH3-CH2-Br + 2 Na -> CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3 + 2 NaBr
