(b) Hund's rule governs how degenerate orbitals are singly filled before pairing; the Aufbau principle governs the order in which orbitals of different energy are filled.
(a) Postulates of Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom
- The electron revolves around the nucleus in certain fixed circular paths called stationary states (or orbits) of definite energy, without radiating any energy, despite being in constant motion (this contradicted classical electromagnetic theory, but was postulated to explain atomic stability).
- The angular momentum of the electron in an orbit is quantized and is an integral multiple of h/2pi: m v r = n h / 2 pi, where n = 1, 2, 3, ... is the principal quantum number.
- Energy is emitted or absorbed by the atom only when the electron jumps ('quantum jump') from one stationary orbit to another, not while moving within an orbit. If the electron jumps from a higher energy orbit (E2) to a lower one (E1), a photon of energy DeltaE = E2 - E1 = h*nu is emitted; energy is absorbed for the reverse jump.
- Each stationary orbit has a definite, fixed value of energy (energy levels), and the energy of an orbit increases with increasing n.
(b) Hund's rule and Aufbau principle …
