The explosion is an internal force; total momentum is conserved, and since it starts at zero, the vector sum of the two pieces' momenta must also stay zero — which is only possible if they move in opposite directions.

Before the explosion, the bomb is at rest, so its total momentum is zero:

p_initial = 0

The forces of explosion are internal to the bomb system (no external force acts during the very short time of explosion), so by the Law of Conservation of Linear Momentum, the total momentum of the system must remain unchanged:

p_initial = p_final

0 = m1 v1 + m2 v2

⇒ m1 v1 = − m2 v2
