Definition: Strain is defined as the ratio of the change in dimension (length, shape, or volume) of a body to its original dimension, when a deforming force is applied. Since it is a ratio of two similar quantities, strain is dimensionless and has no units.
Types of strain:
-
Longitudinal (linear) strain: The ratio of change in length (ΔL) to the original length (L) of a body under a normal (tensile or compressive) force along its length.
Longitudinal strain = ΔL / L
-
Shearing strain: Produced when equal and opposite tangential forces act on the opposite faces of a body, causing a change in shape (not size/volume). It is measured as the angle of shear, θ, through which a face originally perpendicular to the fixed face gets tilted (approximately equal to Δx/L, the relative displacement over the perpendicular height).
