The zeroth law establishes temperature as a state variable; the first law establishes internal energy as a state variable.

(a) Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics: If two systems A and B are separately in thermal equilibrium with a third system C, then A and B are also in thermal equilibrium with each other. This common property shared by systems in mutual thermal equilibrium is what we call TEMPERATURE — the zeroth law is what allows temperature to be defined and measured as a well-defined thermodynamic state variable.
