These four short conversions/tests are classic named reactions of alcohols/phenols/ethers, Grignard reagents, and amines.

(i)(a) Conversion of alkyl halide to ether (Williamson's ether synthesis):

An alkyl halide reacts with sodium alkoxide (prepared from another alcohol and sodium metal) by an SN2 mechanism to give an ether:

R-X + R'-O-Na --> R-O-R' + NaX

Example: CH3Br + C2H5ONa --> CH3-O-C2H5 (methoxyethane) + NaBr.

(i)(b) Conversion of phenol to salicylic acid (Kolbe's Schmidt reaction):

Sodium phenoxide (from phenol + NaOH) is treated with CO2 at 400K and a pressure of 4-7 atmospheres. The electrophilic carbon of CO2 is attacked by the phenoxide's aromatic ring, giving, after acidification, salicylic acid (2-hydroxybenzoic acid):

C6H5-ONa + CO2 --400K, 4-7atm--> sodium salicylate --H3O+--> C6H4(OH)(COOH) (salicylic acid)

(ii)(a) Alcohols and carboxylic acids from Grignard's reagent:

  • Alcohols: A Grignard reagent adds to the carbonyl carbon of an aldehyde or ketone; the resulting alkoxide, on hydrolysis with dilute acid, gives an alcohol. Formaldehyde gives a primary alcohol: RMgX + HCHO --> RCH2-OMgX --H3O+--> RCH2OH. Example: CH3MgBr + HCHO --> CH3CH2OMgBr --H3O+--> CH3CH2OH (ethanol).
  • Carboxylic acids: A Grignard reagent reacts with dry ice (solid CO2), adding across the C=O to give a magnesium carboxylate, which on acidic hydrolysis gives a carboxylic acid with one more carbon than the alkyl group: RMgX + CO2 --> RCOOMgX --H3O+--> RCOOH. Example: CH3MgBr + CO2 --> CH3COOMgBr --H3O+--> CH3COOH (acetic acid).

(ii)(b) Carbylamine reaction: …
