A zero order reaction is one whose rate is independent of the concentration of reactants; this typically happens in reactions occurring on a solid catalyst surface that is fully saturated with reactant.

For a zero order reaction, Rate = k[Reactant]⁰ = k, i.e., the rate is a constant, independent of reactant concentration. This occurs, for example, when a reaction takes place on a catalytic surface and the surface is completely covered by reactant molecules — adding more reactant cannot increase the rate further because the surface area available for reaction is the limiting factor, not the concentration in the bulk.

Examples of zero order reactions:

  1. Decomposition of gaseous ammonia on a hot platinum surface (at high pressure):

    2NH₃(g) →(Pt catalyst, high pressure) N₂(g) + 3H₂(g)

Here the platinum surface is saturated with NH₃ molecules, so the rate depends only on the surface area of the catalyst, not on [NH₃].

  2. Thermal decomposition of HI on a gold surface: …
