Fittig reaction couples two molecules of aryl halide with sodium in dry ether to give a diaryl (biphenyl) product.

The Fittig reaction is a coupling reaction of aromatic halides (aryl halides).

When an aryl halide is treated with sodium metal in dry ether, the two aryl groups join together (couple) to form a biaryl hydrocarbon (a compound containing two benzene rings joined directly), and sodium halide is formed as by-product.

Example - preparation of biphenyl (diphenyl) from bromobenzene:

2 C6H5-Br + 2 Na --(dry ether)--> C6H5-C6H5 (biphenyl) + 2 NaBr
