By measuring the charge on many tiny oil drops, Millikan showed every value obtained was a whole-number multiple of one fixed smallest charge — proving that charge comes in indivisible packets.

In his experiment, R.A. Millikan sprayed fine oil droplets between two horizontal charged plates and balanced the electric force on a charged drop against gravity, allowing him to calculate the amount of charge each individual drop carried.

When he tabulated the charges measured on a large number of different drops, he found that every value was always an integral (whole-number) multiple of a single smallest amount of charge, e=1.6×10−19 Ce = 1.6 \times 10^{-19}\,C. No drop was ever found with a fractional value of this charge.
