Electric field intensity at a point is the force experienced per unit positive test charge placed at that point; for an isolated point charge Q it follows from Coulomb's law as E = Q/(4πε₀r²).

Definition: The electric field intensity (or simply electric field) E⃗\vec E at a point in space due to a charge (or system of charges) is defined as the electrostatic force F⃗\vec F experienced by a small positive test charge q0q_0 placed at that point, divided by the magnitude of the test charge (in the limit q0→0q_0 \to 0, so the test charge itself does not disturb the source charge):

E⃗=lim⁡q0→0F⃗q0\vec E = \lim_{q_0\to 0}\frac{\vec F}{q_0}

Its SI unit is N/C (or V/m).

Derivation for a point charge: Consider a point charge QQ placed at the origin. Place a small test charge q0q_0 at a point P at distance rr from Q. By Coulomb's law, the force on q0q_0 due to Q is

F⃗=14πε0Qq0r2r^\vec F = \frac{1}{4\pi\varepsilon_0}\frac{Qq_0}{r^2}\hat r

where r^\hat r is the unit vector from Q to P. Using the definition of electric field, …
