Materials are classed by their magnetic susceptibility χ: diamagnetic (small negative χ, weakly repelled), paramagnetic (small positive χ, weakly attracted), ferromagnetic (large positive χ, strongly attracted, retains magnetisation).

Magnetic materials are classified by how they respond to an external magnetic field, i.e. by the sign and magnitude of their magnetic susceptibility χ\chi:

  • Diamagnetic materials have all electrons paired (no net atomic magnetic moment); an applied field induces a weak magnetisation opposing it (χ\chi small and negative). They are weakly repelled by a magnet.
  • Paramagnetic materials have unpaired electrons giving each atom a small net magnetic moment; these align weakly with an applied field (χ\chi small and positive) and are weakly attracted.
  • Ferromagnetic materials have strong, spontaneous alignment of atomic moments within domains, giving a large positive χ\chi and strong attraction, plus retained magnetisation after the field is removed. …
