At any point on Earth, the total magnetic field vector B can be resolved into a horizontal component and a vertical component; the angle of dip is the angle between the total field vector and the horizontal.

At a place on the Earth's surface, the Earth's magnetic field B has both a horizontal component (BHB_H, along the geographic north direction in the horizontal plane) and a vertical component (BVB_V, pointing straight down into the Earth in the northern hemisphere).

The angle of dip (or magnetic inclination), δ, is defined as the angle that the resultant magnetic field vector B makes with the horizontal plane at that place.

tan⁡δ=BVBH\tan\delta = \dfrac{B_V}{B_H}
