Opportunity cost = value of the next-best alternative sacrificed; e.g. wheat grown means rice forgone.

Because resources are scarce and have alternative uses, using them for one purpose means sacrificing another. Opportunity cost is the value of the next-best alternative that must be given up to obtain something. It is measured in terms of the sacrificed alternative, not in money alone.
