Many enzymes are made of a protein part (apoenzyme) and a non-protein part (cofactor). When the organic cofactor is loosely (non-covalently) attached and can be separated easily, it is called a coenzyme.
Characteristics of a coenzyme:
- It is a small organic molecule, not a protein.
- It is loosely bound to the apoenzyme and often detaches during the reaction, acting almost like a co-substrate.
- It usually carries chemical groups, electrons or hydrogen atoms from one reaction to another (e.g. NAD and FAD carry hydrogen/electrons in respiration). …
