Leucocytes are the nucleated, colourless white blood cells that protect the body from infection; they are grouped into granulocytes and agranulocytes.

Short note on Leucocytes:

  1. Leucocytes, or white blood cells (WBCs), are colourless because they lack the pigment haemoglobin; unlike RBCs, they possess a nucleus.
  2. They are fewer in number than RBCs (about 6000–8000 per cubic millimetre of blood) and are amoeboid, able to squeeze out of capillaries (diapedesis).
  3. Their main function is defence and immunity — engulfing germs (phagocytosis) and producing antibodies.
  4. They are of two categories:
    • Granulocytes (with granular cytoplasm): neutrophils (phagocytic), eosinophils (allergic/parasitic defence) and basophils (release histamine, heparin). …
