Bohr's effect (the Bohr effect) describes how the binding of oxygen to haemoglobin is influenced by carbon dioxide concentration and pH:
- When the partial pressure of CO2 is high and the pH is low (more acidic) — conditions found in actively respiring tissues — the affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen DECREASES. As a result the oxygen–haemoglobin dissociation curve shifts to the right, and oxygen is readily released (unloaded) to the tissues that need it.
- In the lungs, where CO2 is low and pH is higher, the affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen INCREASES, so oxygen is readily picked up (loaded). …
