Hormones are organic chemical messengers, effective in tiny amounts, and are chemically proteins/peptides, amines (amino-acid derivatives) or steroids.

Chemical properties (nature) of hormones:

  • They are organic chemical substances that act as chemical messengers of the body.
  • They are secreted by endocrine (ductless) glands directly into the blood and are effective in very small (minute) quantities.
  • They are generally non-antigenic and are usually destroyed/inactivated (e.g. in the liver) after doing their work, so they do not accumulate.
  • Chemically, hormones fall into three main groups:
    1. Protein/peptide hormones — e.g. insulin, glucagon, growth hormone; these are water-soluble and act via cell-surface receptors.
