The Calvin cycle (C3 pathway) fixes CO2 into carbohydrate in three stages — carboxylation, reduction and regeneration — using ATP and NADPH from the light reaction.

The Calvin cycle is the light-independent (dark) reaction of photosynthesis, occurring in the stroma of the chloroplast. It is also called the C3 cycle because its first stable product is a 3-carbon compound (3-phosphoglyceric acid, PGA).

Its three stages:

  1. Carboxylation — CO2 combines with the 5-carbon acceptor ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP), catalysed by the enzyme RuBisCO, forming two molecules of 3-carbon PGA.
  2. Reduction — PGA is phosphorylated by ATP and reduced by NADPH to form glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P), a sugar. For every three CO2 fixed, six G3P form, of which one is the net gain used to build glucose.
  3. Regeneration — the remaining G3P molecules are rearranged, using ATP, to regenerate the CO2 acceptor RuBP so the cycle can continue. …
