The prothallus is the free-living gametophyte generation of a fern, bearing the sex organs.

In pteridophytes (ferns), the dominant plant body we see is the sporophyte, which bears sporangia that release haploid spores. On germination, a spore grows into a small, green, heart-shaped (cordate), thalloid, free-living structure called the prothallus. It is autotrophic and anchors to the soil by rhizoids.
