Connective tissue binds and supports body parts; it has few cells scattered in a large amount of intercellular matrix with fibres, e.g. bone, cartilage, blood, adipose tissue.

Short note — Connective tissue:

Connective tissue is one of the four fundamental tissues of the animal body. Its main function is to connect, support, bind, protect and provide packing to different organs and tissues, and to transport materials.

Characteristic features:

  • It is composed of comparatively FEW cells that are widely scattered in an abundant intercellular substance called the MATRIX.
  • The matrix may be jelly-like, fluid or solid, and usually contains fibres (collagen, elastic and reticular fibres).
  • The cells include fibroblasts, macrophages, mast cells, adipocytes, etc.

Types of connective tissue:

  • Loose connective tissue: areolar tissue and adipose (fat-storing) tissue.
  • Dense connective tissue: tendons (connect muscle to bone) and ligaments (connect bone to bone). …
