Electron affinity increases across a period and decreases down a group, broadly following the same trend as ionization enthalpy and electronegativity.

Along a period (left to right): nuclear charge increases while atomic size decreases, so the incoming electron experiences a stronger effective nuclear attraction. This makes electron affinity more negative (energy is released more readily), i.e., electron affinity increases across a period. (Exceptions occur at Group 2 and Group 18 elements, which have stable filled subshells and so have very low, often positive, electron affinities; and Group 15 elements, with stable half-filled p-subshells, have lower electron affinity than expected.)
