Lassaigne's filtrate is made by fusing the organic compound with sodium metal and extracting the fusion product in water; the key chemical change is the conversion of covalently bound N, S, halogens into water-soluble ionic sodium compounds.

Preparation of Lassaigne's filtrate (sodium fusion extract): A small, freshly cut piece of sodium metal is placed in a small, dry ignition (fusion) tube and heated gently until it melts. A small amount of the organic compound to be tested is then added directly onto the molten sodium, and the tube is heated strongly (to red heat) to ensure complete fusion/reaction. The strongly-heated (red-hot) tube is then plunged directly into a small beaker of distilled water (the tube typically cracks due to the sudden temperature change, releasing its contents into the water). The resulting mixture is boiled for a few minutes to ensure complete extraction of the fusion products, and then filtered. The clear filtrate obtained is the sodium fusion extract, commonly called Lassaigne's filtrate (or Lassaigne's extract).
