Gravitational potential at a point = work done per unit mass to bring a test mass from infinity to that point; it is a scalar and is always negative for a gravitating mass.

The gravitational potential VV at a point in a gravitational field is defined as the work done in bringing a unit mass from infinity to that point, without producing any acceleration (i.e., quasi-statically):

V=WmV = \frac{W}{m}

For a point mass MM, the gravitational potential at a distance rr from it is:

V=−GMrV = -\frac{GM}{r}

where GG is the universal gravitational constant. The negative sign reflects that gravity is always attractive — work must be done BY an external agent AGAINST the field to remove a mass to infinity, so potential energy (and potential) increases from a negative value toward zero as r→∞r \to \infty.
