Heating a liquid lowers its viscosity, because the intermolecular cohesive forces that resist relative flow of liquid layers weaken as molecules gain kinetic energy.

Viscosity in a liquid arises mainly from the cohesive forces between its molecules — these forces resist one layer of liquid sliding over another. As temperature increases, the molecules gain kinetic energy and move apart slightly, which weakens the intermolecular attraction responsible for this internal friction. Consequently, the coefficient of viscosity η\eta of a liquid falls as temperature rises (e.g., honey or engine oil flows much more easily when warmed).
