Add the rain's vertical velocity and the wind's horizontal velocity as vectors; the umbrella must tilt to face the direction the rain is coming from — about 19° east of vertical.

Take East as the positive x-direction and vertically upward as positive y.

Rain's velocity (no wind): falls straight down at 35 m/s35\ m/s: v⃗rain=(0, −35)\vec v_{rain} = (0,\,-35).

Wind's effect: blows from east to west at 12 m/s12\ m/s, i.e. in the −x-x direction, carrying the raindrops with it horizontally: adds a component (−12, 0)(-12,\,0).

Resultant velocity of rain (relative to the stationary person):

v⃗net=(−12, −35) m/s\vec v_{net} = (-12,\,-35)\ m/s

∣v⃗net∣=122+352=144+1225=1369=37 m/s|\vec v_{net}| = \sqrt{12^2+35^2} = \sqrt{144+1225}=\sqrt{1369}=37\ m/s
