Moment of inertia is the rotational analogue of mass.

In linear motion, Newton's second law is F=maF = ma — mass mm measures inertia, the resistance to a change in linear velocity.

In rotational motion, the analogous law is τ=Iα\tau = I\alpha — moment of inertia I=∑miri2I = \sum m_i r_i^2 measures rotational inertia, the resistance to a change in angular velocity. Just as a larger mass needs a larger force to produce a given acceleration, a larger moment of inertia needs a larger torque to produce a given angular acceleration.
