(a) Basicity order (strongest to weakest): (C2H5)2NH > C2H5NH2 > C6H5NHCH3 > C6H5NH2, so pKb decreases in the reverse order. (b) Vitamins split into fat-soluble and water-soluble groups, with Vitamin K needed for blood clotting; DNA and RNA differ in sugar, strandedness, bases used, and biological role.

(a) pKb order of the amines

Basicity depends on the availability of the nitrogen lone pair to accept a proton.

  • Aliphatic amines (C2H5NH2, (C2H5)2NH) are more basic than aromatic amines, because in aromatic amines the nitrogen lone pair is partly delocalised into the benzene ring by resonance, making it less available for protonation.
  • Between the two aliphatic amines, the two ethyl groups in (C2H5)2NH donate more electron density to nitrogen (via +I effect) than the single ethyl group in C2H5NH2, so (C2H5)2NH is the stronger base of the two.
  • Between the two aromatic amines, N-methylaniline (C6H5NHCH3) is a slightly stronger base than aniline (C6H5NH2), because the electron-donating methyl group on nitrogen partly offsets the ring's electron-withdrawal by resonance, making N-methylaniline's lone pair a little more available than aniline's.

So, basicity order (strongest to weakest base): (C2H5)2NH > C2H5NH2 > C6H5NHCH3 > C6H5NH2

Since pKb is inversely related to basicity (a weaker base has a higher pKb), the decreasing pKb order (largest pKb, i.e. weakest base, first) is:

C6H5NH2 > C6H5NHCH3 > C2H5NH2 > (C2H5)2NH

(b) Vitamin classification and blood coagulation

Vitamins are classified into two groups based on their solubility:

  1. Fat-soluble vitamins: soluble in fats/oils, and can be stored in the body (in the liver and adipose tissue) — Vitamins A, D, E and K.
  2. Water-soluble vitamins: soluble in water, generally not stored in the body (excess is excreted in urine), so they must be supplied regularly in the diet — the Vitamin B-complex group and Vitamin C.

The vitamin responsible for the normal clotting (coagulation) of blood is Vitamin K.

OR — alternate (b): Structural and functional differences between DNA and RNA

Structural differences:

  • Sugar: DNA contains 2-deoxyribose (lacking an -OH at the 2' carbon); RNA contains ribose (has an -OH at the 2' carbon).
  • Strands: DNA is typically double-stranded (a double helix); RNA is typically single-stranded. …
