Question of 117

Q.For a reaction A + B -> P, the rate is given by Rate = [A][B]^2.

(i) How is the rate of reaction affected if the concentration of B is doubled?
(ii) What is the overall order of reaction if A is present in large excess? (1 1/2+1/2=2) OR For a reaction: 2NH3(g) --Pt--> N2(g) + 3H2(g), Rate = k.
(i) Write the order and molecularity of this reaction.
(ii) Write the unit of k. (1+1=2)

For Rate = k[A][B]², doubling [B] quadruples the rate; with A in large excess the reaction becomes pseudo-second order (order 2) in B alone.

(i) Rate = k[A][B]². If [B] is doubled, keeping [A] fixed: new rate = kA² = 4×k[A][B]² = 4 × (original rate). So the rate increases 4 times.

(ii) If A is present in large excess, its concentration remains effectively constant throughout the reaction, so the rate law simplifies to Rate = k'[B]² (where k' = k[A] is a pseudo rate constant). The reaction is then pseudo-second order overall (order 2, entirely due to B), even though the true (elementary) order is 3 (1 with respect to A + 2 with respect to B).

OR alternative: 2NH3(g) --(Pt catalyst)--> N2(g) + 3H2(g), Rate = k.
