KMnO4 is such a strong oxidising agent that it oxidises the chloride ion of HCl to chlorine gas, wasting KMnO4 on a side reaction and giving a wrong (high) titre.

In the permanganate titration of Fe2+, the solution must be acidified to provide the H+ needed for the reduction half-reaction:

MnO4−+8H++5e−→Mn2++4H2OMnO_4^- + 8H^+ + 5e^- \rightarrow Mn^{2+} + 4H_2O

If HCl is used for acidification, the Cl- ion present is also a reducing agent and gets oxidised by KMnO4 to Cl2 gas:

2Cl−→Cl2+2e−2Cl^- \rightarrow Cl_2 + 2e^-
