A conservative force is path-independent: only the end points matter, and a round trip does zero net work.

A force F is called conservative if the work done by it in moving a particle from point A to point B does not depend on the path followed between A and B, but only on the positions of A and B.

An equivalent statement: the work done by a conservative force around any closed path is zero, i.e. the loop integral of the force along the path vanishes.
