Question of 73

Q.If 1 and 2 be the denser (water) and rarer (air) media respectively and ic be the critical angle, what will be the expressions for n12 and n21? OR A magician makes a glass lens with n=1.47 which disappears in a trough of liquid. What is the refractive index of the liquid? Could the liquid be water? (1+1=2)

At the critical angle, applying Snell's law at the water–air interface gives n21=sin⁡icn_{21}=\sin i_c and n12=1/sin⁡icn_{12}=1/\sin i_c.

Let medium 1 = water (denser), medium 2 = air (rarer). At the critical angle ici_c, light travelling from water into air (1 →\to 2) refracts at 90∘90^\circ. By Snell's law,

n1sin⁡ic=n2sin⁡90∘n_1 \sin i_c = n_2 \sin 90^\circ

n2n1=sin⁡ic\frac{n_2}{n_1} = \sin i_c

By definition, the refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 is n21=n2/n1n_{21} = n_2/n_1, so

n21=sin⁡icn_{21} = \sin i_c
