Viruses are nucleic acid + protein particles that are living inside a host but non-living outside.

Distinguishing features of viruses:

  1. They are ultramicroscopic (visible only under the electron microscope) and much smaller than bacteria.
  2. Each virus has a core of nucleic acid — either DNA or RNA (never both) — surrounded by a protein coat called the capsid.
  3. They have no cellular structure — no cytoplasm, organelles or cell membrane, and no metabolic machinery of their own.
  4. They are obligate parasites — they can multiply only inside a living host cell, using the host's machinery.
  5. They are host-specific and cause many diseases (e.g. polio, influenza, AIDS, mosaic diseases of plants).
  6. Outside a host they can even be crystallised and stored like a chemical.

Living or non-living? Viruses show a dual nature:

  • Living characters: they contain genetic material, can reproduce (multiply) inside a host, show heredity and mutation, and are host-specific. …
