Peptide bond = –CO–NH– linkage formed between –COOH and –NH₂ groups with loss of water (dehydration/condensation).

A peptide bond joins two amino acids in a protein:

  • The carboxyl group (–COOH) of one amino acid reacts with the amino group (–NH₂) of the next.
  • A molecule of water (H₂O) is removed — a condensation (dehydration) reaction.
  • The resulting covalent –CO–NH– linkage is the peptide bond; the product is a dipeptide, and repeated linkages form a polypeptide chain.

–COOH+H2N–→–CO–NH–+H2O\text{–COOH} + \text{H}_2\text{N–} \rightarrow \text{–CO–NH–} + \text{H}_2\text{O}
