Q.What is the difference between tendon and ligament? Where are they found?

Connective Tissue Types

Think about what holds your body together. Your skin doesn't just float over your muscles — something anchors it. Your organs don't rattle around inside you — something cushions them. Your bones don't grind against each other — something pads the joints. That "something" is connective tissue, and it's the most abundant and diverse tissue type in your body.

The name tells you everything: connective tissue connects. It connects skin to muscle, bone to bone, and organ to organ. But it does far more — it supports, protects, insulates, transports, and stores energy.

The Common Thread: Cells Scattered in a Matrix

Every connective tissue shares one structural feature: cells are scattered within an extracellular matrix. That matrix is the real star. It's made of two parts:

• Ground substance — a gel, liquid, or solid that fills the space between cells
• Fibers — proteins like collagen (for strength) and elastin (for stretch)

The cells themselves are few and far between. The matrix does most of the work. This is the opposite of epithelial tissue, where cells are packed tightly together.

The Three Broad Categories

Connective tissues fall into three groups based on how dense and specialised the matrix is.

1. Loose Connective Tissue

The matrix is loose, with lots of ground substance and loosely arranged fibers. It's soft, flexible, and fills spaces.

Areolar tissue is the body's packing material. It's found under the skin, around blood vessels, and between organs. It contains fibroblasts (which make the matrix), macrophages (which eat invaders), and mast cells (which release histamine during allergies). The loose, web-like arrangement allows it to cushion and also let nutrients diffuse through.

Adipose tissue is fat tissue. The cells (adipocytes) are so full of fat that the nucleus gets pushed to the edge — like a balloon filled with oil. It stores energy, insulates against cold, and pads organs like the kidneys and eyeballs.

2. Dense Connective Tissue

Here the matrix is packed with collagen fibers, making it strong. There are two varieties:

Dense regular — collagen fibers run in parallel rows. This is found in tendons (connecting muscle to bone) and ligaments (connecting bone to bone). It resists pulling forces in one direction.

Dense irregular — collagen fibers are woven in all directions. This is found in the dermis of skin and in organ capsules. It resists pulling forces from every direction.

3. Specialised Connective Tissue

These have unique matrices that give them extreme properties.

Cartilage has a firm, rubbery matrix. The cells (chondrocytes) sit in small spaces called lacunae. Cartilage is avascular — no blood vessels — so it heals slowly. Three types exist:

• Hyaline cartilage — most common, at the ends of bones and in the nose
• Fibrocartilage — tough, found in spinal discs and knee menisci
• Elastic cartilage — flexible, found in the ear and epiglottis …
