Ionic compounds form more readily when the metal loses an electron easily and the non-metal gains one favourably.

Two important factors influencing the formation of ionic compounds are:

  1. Low ionisation enthalpy of the metal: the metal atom must be able to lose its valence electron(s) relatively easily to form a stable cation. Elements with low ionisation enthalpy (typically the electropositive s-block metals) readily form cations.

  2. High negative electron gain enthalpy of the non-metal: the non-metal atom must readily accept the electron(s) released by the metal, releasing energy in the process, to form a stable anion. Elements with highly negative electron gain enthalpy (typically halogens and other electronegative non-metals) readily form anions.
