A Lewis acid accepts an electron pair; a Lewis base donates an electron pair.

Lewis acid: a species (molecule or ion) that can accept a pair of electrons from another species to form a new covalent (coordinate/dative) bond. Lewis acids are typically electron-deficient species. Example: BF3 — the boron atom has only 6 electrons around it (an incomplete octet) and an empty p-orbital, so it readily accepts an electron pair, e.g. from NH3, to form the adduct BF3·NH3.
