The pH scale is a logarithmic scale (typically 0 to 14) used to express the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution.

pH is defined as the negative logarithm (to base 10) of the hydrogen ion (H+, or H3O+) concentration expressed in mol/L:

pH=−log⁡10[H+]\text{pH} = -\log_{10}[H^+]

The scale (devised by the chemist Sørensen) generally runs from 0 to 14 for aqueous solutions at 25°C:

  • pH < 7: acidic solution (higher [H+])
  • pH = 7: neutral solution (e.g. pure water, where [H+] = [OH-] = 10^-7 M)
  • pH > 7: basic (alkaline) solution (lower [H+]) …
