Hard water contains dissolved Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺ salts that stop soap from lathering; it can be temporary (bicarbonates, removable by boiling) or permanent (chlorides/sulphates).

Water that readily forms lather with soap is called soft water. Water containing appreciable amounts of dissolved calcium and magnesium salts is called hard water — these ions react with soap (sodium/potassium salts of fatty acids) to form an insoluble, sticky scum/precipitate (calcium/magnesium stearate) instead of a lather, wasting soap and leaving deposits.

Hardness is of two types:

  • Temporary hardness: caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium bicarbonates, Ca(HCO3)2 and Mg(HCO3)2. It can be removed simply by boiling the water, which decomposes the bicarbonates into insoluble carbonates that precipitate out. …
