Atomic mass and molecular mass are relative masses measured against the carbon-12 standard; 1 amu = 1/12 the mass of a C-12 atom.

This is a fundamental mass-concept question from NCERT/CBSE Class 11 Chemistry (Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry).

  1. Atomic mass unit (amu or u):

It is defined as exactly one-twelfth (1/12) of the mass of one atom of the carbon-12 isotope. Numerically,

    1 u = 1.66 × 10⁻²⁴ g (= 1.66 × 10⁻²⁷ kg).

Carbon-12 is taken as the standard and assigned a mass of exactly 12 u.

  2. Atomic mass:

The atomic mass of an element is the mass of one of its atoms expressed relative to the mass of a carbon-12 atom (i.e. in units of u). For example, the atomic mass of hydrogen is about 1 u and of oxygen about 16 u. (The 'average atomic mass' used in the periodic table is the weighted mean of the masses of the naturally occurring isotopes.)

  3. Molecular mass:

The molecular mass of a substance is the sum of the atomic masses of all the atoms present in one molecule of it (in u).

    Examples:

  • H₂O = 2(1) + 16 = 18 u. …
