SiO2 + fused NaOH gives sodium silicate; Al + hot conc. H2SO4 gives Al2(SO4)3 + SO2.

  1. Silicon dioxide (silica) is an acidic oxide. On heating with fused alkali (NaOH) it forms sodium silicate: SiO2 + 2NaOH -> Na2SiO3 + H2O
  2. Concentrated sulphuric acid is a strong oxidising agent. When aluminium is heated with it, aluminium sulphate is formed with the evolution of sulphur dioxide: 2Al + 6H2SO4 (conc.) -> Al2(SO4)3 + 3SO2 (up) + 6H2O …
